It's time for San Diego County to ban animal cruelty at rodeos!

Please write to the San Diego County Board of Supervisors and urge them to pass an ordinance banning animal cruelty at rodeos:

At a minimum, San Diego County should ban the following:

electric prods or shocking devices,
flank or bucking straps,
wire tie-downs,
sharpened or fixed spurs or rowels,
and lariats or lassos.

Irvine Municipal Code:


Sec. 4-5-1111. - Prohibition on rodeos and similar events. No person shall sponsor, conduct, operate, or participate in a rodeo or similar event on public or private property within the City of Irvine. (Ord. No. 11-14, § 5, 10-25-11)

Pasadena Municipal Code:

6.40.040 - Display of wild or exotic animals/rodeos prohibited.

A.It is unlawful for any person to display or sponsor a display of wild or exotic animals on any public property within the city.

B.It is unlawful for any person to conduct or participate in rodeos within the city on public property.

Poway Municipal Code:

6.24.010 Humane treatment required. All rodeo animals shall be treated humanely. No stimulants or hypnotics shall be given to any rodeo animal. The use of the following are prohibited:

A. Flank or bucking straps unless the strap is fleece-lined or neoprene-lined or, in the case of bull riding, a soft cotton rope at least 5/8 inches in diameter.

B. Electric prods or shocking devices, except if required for the safety of humans while (1) loading or unloading an animal into or out of a vehicle; or (2) moving an animal from place to place on the rodeo grounds. In no event shall any such device be used on an animal while in a chute or immediately prior to entering a chute. (Ord. 536 § 1, 2001)

Draft City of Los Angeles ordinance unanimously approved by City Council:

SEC. 53.39.2. RODEOS. PROHIBITED PRACTICES, TECHNIQUES, AND DEVICES. It shall be unlawful for any person to conduct, operate, or participate in a Rodeo at which any animal is induced or encouraged to perform through the use of any practice or technique, or any chemical, mechanical, electrical, manual device, or other similar device or implement, that will cause, or is likely to cause, physical injury, torment, or suffering. Prohibited devices include, but are not limited to, electric prods or shocking devices, flank or bucking straps, wire tie-downs, sharpened or fixed spurs rowels, and lariats or lassos.
