The Animal Protection and Rescue League is a grassroots 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization based in San Diego which works to document and expose animal cruelty occurring behind closed doors, educates the public on animals issues through innovative outreach campaigns, and works with policymakers and politicians to implement humane change!

Since its inception in 2002, APRL has garnered the attention of national and international media, influenced animal protection legislation, conducted numerous rescues of abused factory farmed animals, influenced cities to adopt humane solutions to wildlife management, and created a network of grassroots outreach volunteers.

March 19, 2009--CAMPAIGN VICTORY: BOCA to Stop Using Eggs by End of 2009!

February 27, 2009--Senator Christine Kehoe, Assemblymember Nathan Fletcher, and Assemblywoman Lori Saldana introduced legislation to save the San Diego seals after the city council passed a resolution proposed by APRL to stop implementation of a state court order that would destroy a small public beach where they rest, give birth and nurse their young!

November 4, 2008--Voters overwhelmingly passed Prop 2 to ban some of the most restrictive confinement practices on factory farms with a landslide 63% of the vote. San Diego County voters, where APRL was coordinating, approved the measure by 65%!

July 15, 2008--APRL outreach director Christina Tacoronti was interviewed by ABC-10 News on the abuse of horses by the racing industry.

July 7, 2008--A man who threatened an APRL volunteer who reported seal harassment was sentenced. Read the U.S. Attorney's press release here. Additionally, Congresswoman Susan Davis sent an amicus letter to the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals supporting APRL's ongoing lawsuit to protect the seals.

April & May 2008--A total of 30 APRL volunteers tabled at Earth Day and two other festivals in San Diego, passing out over 6,000 flyers on how consumers can adopt a cruelty-free lifestyle. Click here to see pictures from the events!

January 8, 2008--The San Diego City Council unanimously passed a resolution commending APRL for exposing the cruelty of "foie gras" and encouraged San Diegans to boycott this dish.

May 31, 2007--APRL is urging the City of San Diego to not poison squirrels in city parks in the future after exposing this issue on the news. Please write to the Mayor and ask that the city use more humane methods than poison to control squirrels!

Feb. 2007--We have been holding protests in Chicago to call attention to the sale of illegal foie gras.

December 2006--APRL presented testimony and a video to the San Diego City Council on our proposed ordinance to ban the sale of foie gras without waiting until 2012 for the statewide law to go into effect. The hearing received coverage from KPBS, Fox6 and ABC-10.

Jan. 2008--San Diego City Council commends APRL!



APRL and Animal Acres volunteers rescued these calves while investigating calf ranches in California in Nov. 2006. They had been confined in small crates since birth, and these two were the weakest and on the verge of death.
